Multi-Vehicle Accident on Chester Avenue in Bakersfield

August 8, 2014- A fender bender collision leaves one person with serious injuries, in Kern County.  The multiple car accident happened in Bakersfield, on Friday, at about 3:30 PM.

Claude E. Smith, 66 years old, was driving his 1998 Dodge Ram 1500, north on Chester Avenue.  As he was coming to the intersection at Roberts Lane, he merged into the left turn lane.  The front of the pickup crashed into an automobile that was stopped at the turn lane.

Smith tried to put the Dodge in park and get out of the vehicle, but accidentally put it in reverse instead.  He was partially in and out of the truck as it started to go backwards.  The Ram pickup crashed into three other vehicles and then a chain-link fence east of the roadway.

Smith suffered major injuries and was taken to Kern Medical Center for treatment.

No other injuries have been reported.
