Urbano Munoz, of Los Banos, was driving a 2006 Chevy Impala, with passenger Brian Shiver, of Mendota. Munoz was traveling north on Palm Avenue, south of Highway 152, at about 65-70 mph.
The Impala came to the intersection of Highway 152, and Palm Avenue, and ran the stop sign. The car drove into the path of a semi truck, driven by Silvestre Guadarrama, of Merced, that was eastbound on the highway.
The big rig broadsided the Chevy, and the impact caused the tractor-trailer to travel over the roadway and onto the median. It flipped over and came to rest on its right side, causing a load of melons to spill out. The Impala also ended up in the median of the highway.
Munoz suffered serious head injuries, and was airlifted to a Modesto hospital. Shiver sustained major injuries and was flown to the hospital as well. Guadarrama was moderately hurt and taken to Mercy Medical Center, Merced.
