Fatal Big Rig and Van Accident on American Avenue, in Fresno County

An update has been reported on the van collision that killed four people on Friday, January 9, 2015, in Fresno County.  The occupants of the Chevy Astro van were all from Porterville in Tulare County.  The big rig accident occurred at about 6 PM, near Orange Cove and Reedley.

Augustin Mendoza, 39, was driving the Chevrolet van on American Avenue, with eight passengers.  As he approached the intersection of American and Navelencia avenues, Mendoza tried to pass a semi truck.  The semi was turning left when the mini van attempted to pass.

The van ran into the front of the big rig, which caused the rig to roll over.  Aguileo Vazquez Vargas and his son Fortino Vasquez Tepeco, Pedro Rodriguez Vasquez and Jorge Aguilera were all ejected from the vehicle.  It is reported that they had not been wearing seat belts at the time of the accident.

The 4 victims died at the scene.  The other occupants of the Astro van suffered minor injuries and were taken to Community Regional Medical Center, in Fresno.

The tractor-trailer driver was not injured.

Mendoza was arrested and charged with vehicular manslaughter for trying to pass the semi truck illegally. And for having more people in the van, than seats.
