Hit and Run Car Collision Kills Two on Highway 99 near Atwater

On Monday, February 16, 2015, a hit and run car accident ends in two fatalities, in Merced County.  The vehicle collision occurred on Highway 99, near Atwater, at about 9 AM.

A white or silver sedan was reported to have been northbound in the slow lane on Highway 99.  South of Westside Boulevard, the automobile swerved into the center lane of the freeway, and hit a Nissan Xterra.

The Xterra then rolled over into the grass median and onto the southbound side of the highway.

The driver of the sedan did not stop after hitting the Nissan, but continued on and hit another vehicle.  This time it ran into a Nissan Versa which veered into the southbound lanes, from the impact, but did not overturn.

The hit and run driver then continued on driving north on Hwy 99.  Officers are still trying to locate him or her.

The rear passengers in the Xterra, a 45 year old woman and a 53 year old man, were thrown from the car.  The woman was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.  While the man suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to Doctors Medical Center, in Modesto.

The front seat passenger of the Xterra, a 70 year old man, also died at the scene of the collision.  The 22 year old man, who was driving also sustained major injuries.

No one in the Nissan Versa was reported to have been hurt.
